Has It Come to This?

When I started my blog back in 2005, I never really wanted to moderate comments. At first I let anyone post, including anonymous commenters. But that quickly changed because spammers learned how to utilize the combox to leave a dozen comments linking people to all sorts of weird and wacky places.

I basically forced my commenters to be real people who had to register an account in order to leave comments with the addition of having to authenticate their personhood by typing out an unpronounceable word. Immediately I saw a drop off of spammers to almost zero and that process has been fruitful ever since. Every once in a while I would get a commenter who cussed like a rapper, but I could delete them pretty fast.

But times they are a changing I guess, because now I have foreigners, especially foreigners from the Asian continent and other Pacific rim countries, leaving spam directing people to escort services and other sleazy places. The account system is in place. The authentication process is still in place. Yet some how these folks are able to by pass those security procedures to leave their trashy links. The idea that such a comment can stay on my blog for several hours if I happen to be away from a computer for any length of time makes my skin crawl. I hate the thought that in amongst a bunch of angry atheists, theistic evolutionists, and KJV onlyists yelling at me for my views on the Bible, there sits a comment linking my readers to a porn hub of some sort.

They only choice I had was to enact the nuclear option of turning on comment moderation. I hate doing it, because most of the dear folks who come here on occasion to participate in the comments are civil and articulate. Even some of the angry, atheist trolls. However, I will not tolerate sinful spam. Hopefully this won't be a deterrent for readers.

Sorry to hear about the nonsense you have to deal with Fred. I know other bloggers who I frequent have had similar problems. As I remember Justin Taylor actually shut comments off for a while, not because of bad links, but because of the way people were talking.

I really enjoy you blog and will still be here. Thanks for caring about what gets out there.

P.S. My word verification word is "crasi", very close to "crass", weird huh?

Yes, I also get about one Chinese porn-spam comment per day, and despite feeling that if I do it, then "the terrorists win," I am this --><-- close to enabling moderation myself.

I hope it stops. It would be distracting and prevent you from focusing on what you want to deal with.

Perhaps Fred this is another reason why James White has his comments off?

Hey Leroy,
I know you spent a good deal of time writing those comments relating to my other blog on the "age of the earth," but honestly, posting them under an article dealing with radical, evangelical feminism would had been weird. I read them, AND, I forwarded your critique of the "proof that God exist" onto Sye, the guy who wrote up the test. He wants you to contact him so as to offer a response to your review if you are so inclined.

Tell him Fred sent you. He's looking forward to your email.

Yep, understood Fred, weird is right. It wasn't the appropriate thread but the relevant one was closed and I didn't want my response to get 'stale'.

I felt it might be a bit much to respond to on a thread so I agree with your approach.

I shall contact Sye.

It's amazing that pyromaniacs has been unscathed. But maybe since it's a team blog they can get to comments faster. All the other single person blogs I follow have moderation on.

Actually, there is another choice. The question is whether it's worth the time (and money).

I own my own website and use wordpress. I currently have over 500 emails in the spam filter but NONE of them got through.

I also have it set so that I have to approve any first time commenters and after that they go right through (wordpress remembers their IP address)

Yahoo! offers webhosting for under $15 a month (including the domain name registration) and it's well worth it.

My other blog, biblical premillennialism, is a wordpress blog. I wanted to start a blog addressing premillennialism, so I took the plunge and registered a wordpress account. I like it okay. At least the freebie part of it. I haven't had enough traffic on it to really offer an opinion as to how well the spam filter works.

I've had to do the same thing. Human filth is as Human filth does is what my momma used to always say.
