On Beating Up Girls

Dan offers some insights in response to Piper:

Piper and Wrestling with Girls

Seeing that I am the father of a daughter, who at the age of 1 year, can hold her own against 3 older brothers, I can clearly see his point.

Piper was writing about actual amateur wrestling though - which is not to be confused with a defensive art. Wrestling is a contest between two people to see who can use their strength and weight to pin the other, or cause them to submit. It involves using your opponents body as a thing to grab, squeeze, and clamp down on with your arms, legs, and whatever else you can bring to the table.

I wouldn't let my daughters wrestle (I won a bronze at the provincial level in my hey-day, so I am not just talking about of my armpit either.)

Yet, I took Aikido for years, and I would not hesitate to sign my girls up, nor would I keep my boys from training with girls.

That said, there are some martial art forms that involve a lot of grappling - and would not want my boys grappling with girls in such arts.
