God is Sovereign Over Elections

OK, I must confess that until last Thursday I had absolutely no clue who Ted Haggard was. Perhaps that makes me some sort of out-of-touch, backwoods rube. However, if I had known who he was and then learned about his sin in the manner it was discovered, and if I lived in Colorado, it would not affect my vote against homosexual marriage in the least.

Surprisingly, there are going to be individuals - conservative individuals - who will side in favor with the gay agenda just because they are temporarily rankled by the outward hypocrisy of this guy. Any person who, for revenge sake, is willing to over turn a foundational institution of society just because some tanned faced, plastic smile, mega-church pastor was exposed for engaging in perversion right before an election, is shallow minded and petty.

Additionally, I happen to think George Bush underestimated the resolve of our Islamic enemies in those countries surrounding Iraq, as well as naively assumed all Muslims yearned for democratic freedom as it has been defined in American values for these past 200 plus years. Moreover, I believe our president has been woefully inadequate with shutting down the illegal alien influx from south of the border. In fact, he seems to be blissfully unaware of the major socio-economic problems of having a massive, uneducated third world immigrant population displacing the main working class in our metropolitan areas.

Those criticisms are serious, but that does not mean I am prepared to hand over the governmental affairs to the opposing party that is comprised mainly of people imbibing leftist Marxism just so I can "show those Republicans." The political correct ideology the Democrats will enforce upon this country will shackle us more than any mythical right wing theocracy that allegedly lurks behind the Republican agenda. Not to mention the fact that the suit wearing hippy peaceniks who want to high tail it out of Iraq will bring down disastrous consequences upon us and our allies by embolding our terrorist enemies.

But, I do know the hearts of men are fickle and many of them do not "think" during these times of heated elections. They react emotionally to stories of wayward pastors and American soldiers being shot by snipers.

Yet, in spite of a almost certain Democrat win after Tuesday's election, I still believe God is on His throne and I remain His loyal servant. God is, after all, the sovereign Lord even over elections. A Democrat party win does not mean His purposes have been defeated as some religious conservative spin controllers suggest in their panic pleas to "get out and vote Republican or the sky will fall and crush us all to death and the gays will eat our children alive!!!"

Let us be reminded of our Sovereign God's view of elections:

And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell upon all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings. Acts 17:26

Why do the nations rage? And the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against His anointed, saying, "Let us break Their bonds in pieces and cast away Their cords from us." He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision. Psalm 2:1-4

The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect. Psalm 33:10

All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him, "What have you done?" Daniel 4:35

Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His. And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings (congressman) and raises up kings (senators) Daniel 2:20-21

And the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. Daniel 2:44

Hi Fred,

While Republicans are largely closer to sensible and Christian views on most issues, the balance of truth is largely on the side of the argument that says Christians are being used rather being being served by the Republican leadership of the party.

They have held control all 3 branches of the Federal government throughout the Bush presidency. While the Democrats held House and Senate for nearly 40 after WW2, the Republicans have allowed this kind of absolute power to corrupt them much quicker and some would argue much more thoroughly.

It's time to bring back checks & balances to the governing of the U.S.

I would agree with you that Christians are more often than not "used" by Republicans. That is in part due more to the poor theology that drives those groups of Christians who erroneously view politics as the means to help along the Kingdom of God.

However, handing over control of the government to a party that is driven so heavily by a deranged, left wing worldview will have disastrous consequences on our society. This would go beyond just our commitment in Iraq, to the appointment of key judges in both appeal courts and the supreme court. We can't have any more bong smoking hippy liberal judges destroying America. We do not want to have another repeat of 1976 and the Carter dynasty.

We can find other ways to check and balance.

No, Mac really hasn't. I attended a seminary discipleship lab that is held here at GTY that Phil leads and he gave some good thoughts about the entire thing. Much of it was captured in that blog he wrote last week.

At least democrats seem to be honest about their positions. It seems to me many republicans have that pharisee swaggarr. I would rather vote for a pro abortionist than for a person who says they'er anti-abortion but won't do anything about the abortion issue. It seems to me that democrats are honest in their depravity. Then a lot of republicans cover their depravity with moralism(whitewashed tooms full of dead mens bones). But I would be ignorant to think this is all just the work of men mindlessly and by chance coming into fruition. I know the world system is in rebellion against Jesus Christ. I see it when I look around in America and 99% of everything I see is made by foreigners for hardly any money. Then if we have to build a house or mow a lawn we started importing foreigners. Now America seems to be a economy based on lots of neat things made dirt cheap by foreigners. While America is busy putting women and foreigners in every area of employment you see China and India killing off women from the womb. China and India are mass murdering female babies to support cheap male labor. It's clear this is only possible in satan's world system. But I know God allows it for the time being. Nations are building up God's wrath against them. One day it's going to end. I'm not going to vote to change anyone's way of life. I'll go spread the gospel in it's full truth, i'll preach Christ crucified. God will use that tto change the hearts of men. It's clear the route America is going is due to their irreverance for God. God has chosen to allow this for God's purposes. Ted Haggard is just the tip of a gargantuan ice berg of people parading around as ministers and servants of light. I won't laugh when God's judgement comes. When their calamity is ripe I'll pray for them.

I'm not registered a democrat. And some of you have seen my post on scripture. I'm no "liberal", whatever that means, anyways. I see a lot of republicans who seem to be big liars about their agenda. It seems to me many have a pharisee swaggar. They appear to be whitewashed tooms full of dead mens bones(moralism). I would rather hear a godless democrate tell the truth on what they believe. At least they diden't try to decieve us.
