Is Your Church Observing Porn Sunday?

According to the Spiritual Life section of Saturday's Oct. 1st edition of Scottsdale Arizonia's East Valley Scottsdale Tribune, Oct. 2nd is the observance of National Porn Sunday. It is a movement by about 200 congregations around the country to address the impact of pornography.

CCM artist, Clay Crosse and his wife Renee, will be speaking at the morning services of Rock Point Church in Gilbert AZ and in the evening the church will be premiering the film Missionary Position which is rated PG-13. I can only hope they issue one of those parental discretion warnings right before the showing. Tonight on a very special "Growing Pains."

I in no way wish to trivalize the depraved affects pornography has not only on the spiritual lives of Christian families, but upon our society in general. Sexual images are so readily available with one click of the computer mouse that anyone, even children, can access some of the most debase and gross pornography imaginable. However, is it necessary to devote a Lord's Day to addressing it as a subject?

I personally believe a national porn Sunday is more dangerous than these Christians have considered. Being a guy, I can personally attest to how easily my imagination can be stirred up with just the mere mention of the subject of pornography. Men already struggle with guarding their hearts in this area, so is it wise to specifically address pornography in the setting of a congregation gathered for worship and the preaching of God's Word? I believe these pastors organizing the event are being a tad naive.

Moreover, what about the discomfort of sitting through a lecture on the dangers of pornography with members of the opposite sex? I can only assume both men and women are going to be present together? Talk about ackward. I can still recall vividly a lecture on pornography during a mid-week Church service given by our self-appointed cultural crusader at my Baptist church. He was the guy big on Bill Gothard stuff. He made it his mission to not only make sure the "dry laws" of Craighead county were enforced, but also went around to quick marts to make sure they weren't selling Playboys.

On this particular mid-week service, for some mysterious reason, our pastor thought it would be profitable to allow him to take the pulpit and commence describing the horrors of pornography in the most disturbing graphic detail. The worse was his stories about children, who after viewing their parents pornography, attempted to act out what they saw on their siblings. Everyone was fidgeting. Wide-eyed mothers hurried their children out the door while the men avoided making eye contact with each other and kept looking down at the floor. The guy would probably had done better to have shown the director's cut of "A Clockwork Orange." Thankfully, our pastor wised up, interrupted the presentation and told the guy to take it down a notch. I became so troubled I had to leave.

Now, if I am recalling an instance from nearly 15 years or more ago detailing this subject, can it be the best thing for the men of a Church to have a national porn Sunday to implant even more images of sexual sin in their minds?

The believers of Rock Point and the other 200 or so Churches have good intentions, but there are better ways to address this with men who are the most influenced by sexual images than to devote an entire Sunday in a congregational setting. To be honest, I do hope this is one of those movements that dies a quick death.

Here's my prediction. Porn sites will experience a noticable increase in traffic following following Pornday, which will gradually taper off, but will still remain higher than before.

Thanks for the heads up. These kinds of antics make me sick and angry. I think we should keep a constant exposure of churches that have abandoned the "Preach the Word" charge of 2 Timothy. BTW, Keep up such hunting and you will make our "Hot Dog" list.
